Jimmie L. Williams High School Scholarship

Phi Beta Sigma, Incorporated, Iota Mu Sigma Chapter is pleased to announce the Jimmie L. Williams Memorial High School Scholarship. All scholarships are a one-time award. The scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors.

Phi Beta Sigma, Inc. was founded on January 9, 1914 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The Founding Fathers A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse and Charles I. Brown adopted three principles to guide Sigma: Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.

 

The fraternity now consists of men who are undergraduate and graduate students, seeking to positively impact the community and improve the lives of others. The fraternity members continue to live by its motto, “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity”.

Eligibility Criteria

  • High School male graduating senior.

  • Graduating Male senior with a record of volunteerism in the community in non-school sponsored activities and participation in extracurricular school activities.

  • Minimum GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or converted equivalent for 5.0 or 6.0 scales) and plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college in the Fall of 2025.

  • Must be a resident of Tarrant county.

  • Must be applying to a college with a Fall matriculation date.

Deadline for Submission

All entries must be postmarked no later than Friday May 09, 2025.

Mailing & Other Requirements

  • Completed application.

  • Official Transcripts.

  • Two letters of recommendation (with recommenders contact info included i.e. email and phone number); one that speaks to your leadership qualities and experiences and one that speaks to your community service experiences (Letters from family members/guardians will not be accepted).

  • All scholarship applicants must submit (on school letterhead) proof of enrollment status showing full time fall enrollment, by email to education@arlingtonsigmas.org.

Please Note: If proof of enrollment is not received by the submission deadline, the scholarship will be forfeited.
 

Method of Selection

  • All applications are reviewed by the Jimmie L. Williams Memorial Scholarship Committee.

  • Scholarships will be given to students based upon the total rubric score.

Method of Distribution

  • Scholarship funds will be paid in January 2026 directly to the college and not to the student.

  • It will be the student’s responsibility to submit to Iota Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma their proof of enrollment, student ID and college information.

Dear Applicant:
We would like to thank you for your interest in the Phi Beta Sigma, Iota Mu Sigma Jimmie L. Williams Memorial Scholarship.
The requirements of the scholarship are as follows:

  • Must be a student living in Tarrant County (at time of graduation).

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or converted equivalent for 5.0 or 6.0 scales).

  • Must plan to attend a 2 or 4-year college in the Fall of 2025.

  • Must be a high school graduating senior.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, all applicants must provide a properly formatted, one-page essay response to the question provided at the end of the application. In addition, all applicants must also provide two letters of recommendation with one speaking to each of the following categories (Letters from family members/guardians will not be accepted):

  • Leadership qualities and experiences

  • Community service experiences

2. How do you define “legacy”? What legacy are you leaving at your high school? How does your legacy reflect who you are and who you are becoming?

3. Detail your 2 greatest strengths, along with your biggest area of opportunity. Explain why you chose each.

I hereby understand that if chosen as a scholarship winner, per Iota Mu Sigma Scholarship policy, it is my responsibility to remit to the Foundation the appropriate information for my scholarship to be paid directly to my educational institution in January of 2025.

I hereby understand I will not submit this application without all required attachments and supporting information.

Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet eligibility criteria will not be considered for this scholarship.
